Abstract
The way of understanding the words of the Quran in the process of exegesis is rested on rules and regulation; there are certain principles on the basis of which the meanings of words can be discerned. In this paper an attempt has been to extract those principles by analyzing the text of his Tafsir al-Mizan. According to the Allama these principles include: first, the characteristics of the Masadeeq (the intended/implied meaning) of words are different from their literal meanings. In this way it becomes possible to apply a word on different and various Masadeeq. Second, the words that are associated with the characteristics of God and the world-hereafter are largely used for metaphysical and sublime masadeeq. Here, the common masadeeq and meanings of words must not divert the attention of the exegesist from those sublime meanings and masadeeq. Third, with the passage of time the meanings of some words have been changed in a manner that their meanings are different from their original Arabic usage. The criterion of understanding those words properly is their usage during the era of revelation. Fourth, in the Quran some words have been given specific meanings which must be kept in consideration in the process of exegesis. Fifth, many non-Arabic words have got new meanings after entering in the vocabulary of Arabic (alfaz-e-Moar’raba). To identify the meanings of such words their usage in Arabic language and literature must be kept in view.
